The Xbox Games Showcase is often dominated by major franchises and blockbuster reveals, but one of the event's most eye-catching appearances came from a much smaller title.
Vivarium, the hand-drawn life-sim adventure from Studio Meadowflower, made a strong impression during the showcase with new gameplay footage and a closer look at its anime-inspired world.
While the game wasn't technically announced for the first time during the event, its appearance introduced Vivarium to a much wider audience - and judging by the reaction online, plenty of players have already added it to their watchlists.
Set to launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass, Vivarium blends life-simulation mechanics with exploration, storytelling, and a striking visual style inspired by classic animation.
What immediately stands out is the artwork.
Every environment, character, and scene appears hand-painted, creating a look that feels closer to a traditional animated film than a typical video game. In an industry increasingly focused on photorealistic graphics, Vivarium's artistic direction helps it stand apart from almost everything else shown during the showcase.
The game also seems to embrace a slower, more personal style of play. Players will build relationships, explore the world, uncover stories, and shape their own experience rather than focusing on combat or high-stakes action.
That combination could make Vivarium particularly appealing to anime fans.
