Xbox's new Disc-to-Digital system will let players use supported physical Xbox games to unlock digital access, including features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming where available, without invalidating the original disc.
The games industry might be rapidly moving towards an all-digital future, but Xbox isn't quite ready to leave your physical collection behind.
Microsoft has officially announced a new Disc-to-Digital feature, allowing players to use supported physical Xbox games to unlock digital access across the wider Xbox ecosystem. Testing begins for Xbox Insiders on August 31.
It's a potentially significant step for anyone with shelves full of Xbox games.
The process sounds surprisingly straightforward.
Players insert a supported game into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch it. Xbox then grants a digital entitlement connected to that physical copy.
That can open up digital benefits including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where those features are supported.
Crucially, the original disc isn't rendered useless - Microsoft says it will continue working exactly as before.
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games are expected to support the system, with Microsoft saying it is starting with thousands of titles and intends to add more over time.
Not everything will be included, however, and publisher participation will play a role.
The bigger story here is preservation.
As consoles increasingly move away from disc drives, physical players face an obvious problem: what happens to the games they already own?
Xbox's solution could provide a bridge between the two eras.
Instead of asking players to repurchase games they already own physically, Disc-to-Digital is designed to let that ownership carry forward into parts of Xbox's increasingly digital ecosystem.
Microsoft itself describes the feature as part of its broader commitment to game preservation, saying it wants players to have greater confidence that the games they buy will remain accessible for years to come.
It's especially interesting given what's happening elsewhere in the industry. Sony recently confirmed plans to end production of new physical PlayStation game discs in January 2028, making questions surrounding existing physical libraries increasingly relevant.
The industry may still be heading towards digital.
Xbox just appears to be trying to make sure our old discs aren't completely left behind.
Keep Calm and waka waka...
