Key Takeaway

Electronic Arts has announced the closure of BioWare after more than 30 years, alongside the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game. The decision comes amid wider restructuring and reported job losses across EA.

It's a sad day for the games industry.

BioWare, the legendary RPG developer behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is closing its doors after more than 30 years.

Electronic Arts confirmed the decision on 21 October 2026, bringing an end to one of gaming's most influential development studios.

And in another devastating blow for fans, the next Mass Effect game has also been cancelled.

A Difficult Goodbye for a Legendary Studio

In an emotional statement published on its official website, BioWare confirmed that development on the next Mass Effect project, which was still in its early stages, would be discontinued.

"There is nothing easy about writing those words."

The studio thanked its developers and community, reflecting on the countless adventures, characters and stories that have defined its history.

Founded in 1995, BioWare became synonymous with ambitious, story-driven RPGs, creating beloved franchises and experiences including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Its games helped shape the modern RPG, particularly through their emphasis on meaningful player choices, memorable companions and branching narratives.

EA Restructuring Brings Hundreds of Job Losses

The closure comes as part of a wider restructuring at Electronic Arts.

According to The Verge, citing Bloomberg, approximately 400 employees are being laid off across EA, including around 50 at BioWare.

In an internal announcement shared publicly, EA leadership explained that the company is concentrating its resources on fewer projects and areas with greater growth potential.

The decision follows a difficult period for BioWare, including the troubled reception of Anthem and disappointing sales expectations for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

A Legacy That Won't Be Forgotten

Although BioWare's doors are closing, its influence on gaming will continue.

From exploring the Normandy alongside Commander Shepard to making difficult decisions in Thedas, the studio created worlds and characters that millions of players connected with.

For the developers affected, the closure marks an especially difficult moment, and another significant loss of talent and experience for the industry.

BioWare may be coming to an end, but the stories it created will remain part of gaming history.
