GTA VI's long-awaited Extended Look goes live today, August 27, with the Netflix premiere beginning at 8pm in the UK. Despite significant leaks appearing ahead of the showcase, anticipation around Rockstar's official presentation remains enormous.
After years of waiting, speculation and carefully controlled reveals, Grand Theft Auto VI is finally getting its big extended showcase today.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix today, August 27, before becoming available through Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA VI website six hours later.
And under normal circumstances, that would easily be the biggest GTA story of the week.
These aren't normal circumstances.
The Netflix premiere is happening simultaneously around the world, so your start time depends on where you're watching.
The presentation will initially be available through Netflix, with Rockstar releasing it more widely through YouTube and the official GTA VI website six hours later.
Of course, Rockstar hasn't managed to reach today's showcase with all of its surprises intact.
Over the past week, footage reportedly taken from a playable build of GTA VI has steadily appeared online, offering unofficial glimpses at gameplay and locations around Vice City.
Potential story spoilers have also begun circulating, making avoiding GTA VI information increasingly difficult for anyone hoping to go into the game completely fresh.
Rockstar has understandably been less than pleased.
In a statement addressing the situation, the developer described seeing the game leaked in this way as "heartbreaking for our team", while stressing that this wasn't how it wanted players to experience something its developers have spent years creating.
For a game whose marketing has been so carefully controlled, it's a major blow.
But strangely, it doesn't appear to have taken much away from today's event.
For most games, having gameplay footage appear online immediately before a major showcase could completely deflate the occasion.
GTA VI seems to exist on a different level.
The leaks have given players plenty to dissect, but disconnected clips aren't the same thing as seeing Rockstar properly demonstrate the game.
Today's presentation should finally provide some context.
Rather than shaky clips, snippets and second-hand descriptions, we'll get a deliberately constructed look at what Rockstar wants GTA VI to be - and potentially a much better understanding of how its world, characters and gameplay systems fit together.
Official previews are also expected alongside the showcase following a private presentation reportedly held by Rockstar, meaning today could produce considerably more GTA VI information than we've had in quite some time.
There's something remarkable about Rockstar's ability to maintain this level of anticipation.
GTA VI has been discussed, dissected, leaked and speculated about for years. We've had enormous gaps between official reveals, countless rumours and now another significant leak ahead of one of Rockstar's biggest marketing beats.
Yet people are still waiting to see more.
With GTA VI currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, today's Extended Look represents another major milestone on the game's very long road to release.
The leaks might have spoiled a few surprises.
They certainly haven't stopped everyone from watching.
