Epic Games has reportedly delayed an unannounced Marvel and Star Wars multiplayer shooter while introducing an AI-first development approach, with generative AI expected to play a much larger role in programming and artwork.
A game bringing together Marvel and Star Wars characters sounds like the kind of crossover that would get plenty of attention. But Epic Games' unannounced Disney project is now making headlines for a very different reason.
According to a Bloomberg report, Epic has delayed the multiplayer shooter and instructed its development team to adopt an “AI first” production model, with artificial intelligence taking a much bigger role in creating the game.
The project was reportedly targeting a March 2027 release, but no replacement date has been communicated.
Perhaps the most surprising detail comes from internal communications reportedly reviewed by Bloomberg.
One of the game's directors allegedly told staff there would be “no more hand-written code”, while artwork would be produced through “full AI workflows.”
Developers have reportedly been instructed to use tools including Anthropic's Claude, with human staff overseeing and directing the resulting work.
It's a significant change for a major game development project, particularly one involving two of Disney's biggest entertainment franchises.
The shift isn't limited to this mysterious crossover.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has publicly acknowledged a wider company push towards AI-assisted development, explaining that the goal is to help teams create more and better work rather than simply reduce headcount.
Speaking on X following the reports, Sweeney described Epic's ambition as surviving the AI revolution while helping developers build better code and content faster.
However, the reported changes raise questions about how heavily major studios could come to rely on generative AI, particularly in creative disciplines such as programming and art.
For now, Epic's Marvel and Star Wars crossover remains unannounced, with no confirmed release date or gameplay details.
Whether its AI-first approach ultimately speeds up development or introduces new challenges remains to be seen. One thing is certain: this project is attracting attention long before anyone has played it.
Keep Calm and waka waka...
