Principal Engineer

My client is presenting a VC-backed browser-native gaming platform designed for teenagers to build and play games instantly. Our mission is to create the most accessible sandbox game ever, to unlock imagination, to empower people to express themselves and to become game creators.

We are looking for a hands-on Principal Engineer to join us in a pivotal role, someone who wants to work as a technical strategist, helping to build out our core development team, and also as an active contributor across the entire stack. You will be working alongside a team of proven founders who
have a track record and have previously exited a business.

If you are passionate about game development, want to be part of something from an early stage and you are committed to building the next generation of gaming experiences, please get in touch - we'd love to speak with you!

Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain high-quality game code, architecture, and systems
• Work closely with the entire team, including product and design, to ensure smooth implementation of features and improvements
• Collaborate with the team to optimize game performance across multiple devices and platforms
• Ensure scalability and stability of multiplayer architecture
• Actively participate in code reviews and provide feedback on code quality
• Mentor and support junior team members through former experience shipping code at a high standard
• Communicate effectively with team members in a collaborative / rapidly changing work environment
• Ability to context switch between technical strategy and contributing directly to codebase

Requirements:
• At least 5-7 years of game development experience
• Proven experience shipping a game from concept to launch
• Broad understanding of networking, game engine, physics and rendering technologies
• Knowledge of browser technologies, devices, HTML5, WebGL, and Three.js (bonus)
• Experience working in a small studio (5-30 people)
• Excellent communication skills and a strong team player attitude
• Ability to tolerate and overcome challenges in a fast-paced startup environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Obsessed with optimising game performance, even on low-end hardware ("running on a potato")
• Willing to learn new technologies, and adapt to moving industry standards
• Understand the long-term product vision and strategy to future-proof technical decisions
• Ability to communicate and align the entire team on technical roadmap and a world-class technical standard
• Experience building scalable multiplayer architecture

Personal Attributes:
• Detail-oriented and committed to delivering high-quality work
• A strong desire to work in a startup-style environment
• Opinionated about how to produce high-quality output - both individually and as a team
• Passionate about the gaming industry, player experience and our mission to empower young creators

What We Offer:
• Opportunity to work on high potential venture-backed games platform alongside founder with a proven track record
• Competitive salary
• Share options in a high-potential gaming start-up

To apply, please submit your resume, and a link to your portfolio or examples of your work. This is an important role and the hiring process will be led by the founders directly.
