We're working with one of the UK's top development studios as they seek to add a Lead Character Artist to their team.

This studio is renowned for their working environment and studio culture, they've fostered a professional, fun, and supportive working environment with an anti-crunch ethos. Plus, they're responsible for contributing to some of the biggest titles in recent years!

As a Lead Character Artist you will play a pivotal role in their hugely successful Art department. This is a hands-on role where you'll retain the creative freedom to create stunning characters across multiple projects, while inspiring your team of Character Artists to do likewise.

Your responsibilities...

  • Guide the Character Art team in producing top-notch characters and creatures across various styles
  • Work alongside Art Directors and Concept Artists to establish visual and technical standards, ensuring precision and adherence to the original aesthetic vision
  • Conduct regular artwork reviews within the character art team, providing clear, concise feedback to maintain high quality and creative unity
  • Collaborate with Animators and Technical Artists to ensure smooth integration of characters into the game engine
  • Coordinate with Production to prioritise tasks and manage the character art workload
  • Maintain regular communication with client's Art team, building strong relationships and helping them achieve their objectives
  • Advocate for efficient processes, partnering with Tech Artists to enhance workflows and shaders, and support the team in resolving technical challenges
  • Ensure the Character team follows submission guidelines, including updating Jira tickets and following naming conventions
  • Stay informed on industry trends and best practices, exploring new tools and techniques to improve the character art pipeline
  • Develop documentation on various topics, including style guides, technical instructions, and onboarding materials
  • Conduct inductions and probationary reviews for new team members, providing feedback to art leadership on employee performance
  • Mentor the Character Art team, fostering their growth and showing a commitment to ongoing learning and knowledge sharing
  • Exhibit strong leadership qualities, including positivity, enthusiasm, leading by example, and active listening

The skills and experience you'll bring to the role...
  • Proficiency in modeling and texturing/surfacing
  • Flexibility and adaptability to various requirements and styles
  • Expertise in industry-standard software like ZBrush, Maya, Substance Painter, and Adobe Photoshop, along with at least one major game engine such as Unreal Engine
  • Excellent grasp of anatomy, form, and proportion, with the ability to create compelling human characters and creatures
  • Thorough knowledge of a modern character art pipeline and optimization for games
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience leading a team of artists
  • 5 or more years' experience or two credited titles as a Senior or Lead Character Artist
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality character assets for AAA titles
  • Located in the UK with the full right to work in the UK
