Would you like to work on some of the greatest franchises in gaming history? Certain Affinity is an exclusive, independent Austin developer comprised of a tightly-knit group of experienced, no-nonsense veterans committed to solid work/life balance. We’re best known for co-developing numerous AAA FPS games, though we are also creating compelling new games of our own.

As Director of Quality Assurance (QA) you will use your deep understanding of development and test best practices to plan, develop, and execute the overall QA strategies company-wide. You will take ownership of how Certain Affinity ensures quality across our teams, products, and services. You will provide a project-agnostic voice for the QA team to the company’s executive leaders, advocating for the team’s needs and serving as a conduit between other departments. You will help members of the QA team at every level with skills development and career guidance and grow the team by finding and mentoring new members.

Ultimately you will play an essential role in helping an exceptionally talented group of testers set and maintain a high-quality bar for all our games in development and when they become a live service.

Team Building

  • Identify and recruit test talent at all levels and oversee onboarding and integration of new team members
  • Promote company values within the department and collaboration across departments
  • Develop and promote a strong quality-first culture that encourages qualitative feedback and early adoption of test-driven development

Professional Development

  • Institute a framework for coaching, mentoring, and education for continued skills development among members of the department
  • Partner with HR to develop career ladders and other growth resources for all disciplines within the department
  • Ensure managers are providing regular, quality feedback and oversee quarterly and annual feedback and reviews
  • Mentor across all levels, and outside of the discipline, where appropriate, on product quality, test processes, and best practices

Optimization and Efficiency

  • Ensure Testers are helping each other and collaborating across projects
  • Promote the development and adoption of repeatable test processes and best practices, including partnering with Design to promote a playtest-driven culture
  • Drive identification, trial, and adoption of new tools and techniques that improve efficiency and streamline test efforts
  • Collaborate with Development to define test needs and build a solid Quality Engineering discipline to support the quality tool and automation needs for projects
  • Establish methods for Grey/White box testing on appropriate features/tools

Management and Leadership

  • Partner with leads across all projects, providing support as they manage their teams and solving issues as a collaborative, well-aligned QA management team
  • Identify and evangelize QA best practices by partnering with Production and Development leadership
  • Manage the top-level leaders in the department, including project-level leads and shared service leads
  • Develop succession plans, manage risk, and identify growth opportunities for future leaders
  • Leverage the QA team to contribute to qualitative feedback and articulation of the user experience
  • Propose and define QA management methodologies and reporting systems, ensuring clear communication with all relevant teams
  • Advocate effective QA processes at all release phases, including the pre- and post-release states
  • Coordinate and direct off-site Quality Assurance agents and ensure efficient and thorough testing and reporting
  • Develop best practices for monitoring community feedback, customer care reports, and internal data to identify key issues
  • Manage budgeting and headcount for the QA department
  • Allocate QA resources where needed company-wide
  • Backfill as a QA Lead when necessary


  • Advocate for the department, communicating successes, challenges, and points of view and championing consistent processes
  • Promote the company externally, with emphasis on the talent and accomplishments of its testers.


  • 10+ years overall QA experience in games and 5+ years running a QA team that has shipped multiple AAA consoleand PC titles
  • 3+ years’ experience supporting online services for console and PC titles
  • A strong eye for fun and engaging gameplay with an ability to critically but respectfully dissect work and suggest ways to improve it
  • Expertise and understanding of the entire development process
  • Experience mitigating and resolving risks
  • Experience working with and tasking SDET teams
  • Experience building data-driven reports: fix / find rates & milestone / project burn-downs, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and time and project management skills
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, self-directed, and capable of instilling that characteristic in others
  • Ability to multi-task and handle many discrete tasks at once without losing focus on any individual items and without missing a stride
  • Understanding of technical constraints and budgets in games and proven ability to work within them
  • A solution-oriented change agent accustomed to accountability and driving improvement within organizations, with examples to share outlining improved team dynamics and performance within diverse environments
  • A diplomatic leader able to have crucial, and at times sensitive, conversations
  • An inspirational leader who can “rally the troops” and seize opportunities through improved communication and organization
  • The ability to support, manage and implement project tasks with shifting priorities
  • Mastery of JIRA and other industry-standard bug tracking software
  • Experience supporting online services with related release cycles, interactions with CS/GM teams, etc.
  • Familiarity with certification and submissions requirements for all major consoles and experience working directly with first party groups on submissions and product management
