Signs That It's Time To Advance Your Career In Games

As part of our Cheat Codes series, we spoke to Dan from leading games recruitment agency, Aardvark Swift to hear some of the telltale signs that it's time to start the process of finding an exciting new role! Whether your current role is getting stale or you're searching for new senior roles in the games industry.

 Change in Personal Circumstances

Sometimes the need for career advancement or even just a new job is obvious, but not because of anything to do with your actual role. For a lot of people, this could be a big shift in their personal life, such as buying a new house or plans to start a family. Big changes at home will often make it clear it's time to make big changes at work.

No Room to Progress

Maybe you're working in a smaller studio with limited options for progressing or a much larger team where it's easy to get passed over for promotions. If this is the case, there's nothing wrong with looking outward for an opportunity to take the next step in your career.

Lack of Motivation

Sometimes you'll be happy with your work, getting on with your colleagues, and enjoying the company, but there isn't anything new happening. Your projects are fine, but they're not holding your interest like they used to, or they're not challenging you in the way that they did before. If your role is fulling you like it used to, it's time to find a new challenge that can allow you to continue to develop.

Poor Work-Life Balance

If motivation isn't a reason for you to move, maybe you're finding yourself having to go into the office every day. A lot of studios now offer hybrid working, and some even offer fully-remote options. With a growing number of studios offering things like the option to pick your own hours, it's important to assess where you're current workplace is at, to see if they're keeping up with the times. Some are making lots of progress, but others aren't looking to make changes any time soon: that's when it's time to look elsewhere.

Not Enough Money

As an experienced recruiter, I'm fully aware that one of the biggest reasons to move can be for money. It's one of the most obvious, but not one that gets talked about enough. Given the rising cost of living in recent years, it's become even more of a major factor. Simply put, if you're not getting paid enough, it's definitely time for a change.

If any of these signs sound like something you've thought about before, it could be time for a new role! Aardvark Swift is currently looking to fill more than 200 roles through our site!
