The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Has Been Given the VR Treatment

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild BetterVR mod

Key Takeaway

BetterVR is a free fan-made conversion that adds motion controls, tracked hands and arms, physical weapon interactions, and first-person VR support to Breath of the Wild through the Cemu emulator on PC.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild already gave players an enormous version of Hyrule to explore, but a fan-made project is taking that sense of adventure one step further by putting players directly inside it.

Created by modder Crementif, BetterVR is a free flatscreen-to-VR conversion that transforms the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild into a much more fully featured VR experience than you might expect from a mod.

And this isn't simply a case of strapping a VR camera onto the existing game.

More Than Just a First-Person Camera

BetterVR includes full hand and arm support, motion-controlled interactions, gestures for equipping and throwing weapons, and the ability to physically wield weapons and torches.

There's even an optional third-person perspective for players who don't want to experience everything through Link's eyes.

Five Years of Development

The project has been five years in the making, and according to 80 Level, has received around 20 updates since its original release, adding fixes, improvements, and additional polish along the way.

To get everything working, players need to run the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild through the Cemu emulator on PC, alongside a compatible VR setup and a legally owned copy of the game.

The result offers a fascinating new perspective on a game many players already know inside and out.

Walking across Hyrule Field, physically interacting with the world, and facing enemies at their actual scale could be enough to make another trip through Breath of the Wild feel surprisingly fresh.

The Project Isn't Finished Yet

Better still, development isn't finished. Potential future additions include Linux support, dual wielding, further rendering improvements, and even multiplayer.

Modding Insight

Projects like BetterVR show how far community modding has evolved. Instead of simply changing textures or mechanics, modern mods can fundamentally rework how a game is played and experienced.

And Crementif apparently isn't stopping with Zelda either - a VR conversion of Mario Kart 8 is also planned.
