DLSS 5 doesn't simply upscale an existing image. Its neural model interprets information from the game and enhances how certain elements should appear, leading some players to question whether the result is still the image originally created by the game's artists.

That debate became significantly louder after a DLSS 5 library leaked through an early-access build of NBA 2K27.

Modders quickly began experimenting with the technology in unsupported games including Control and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, producing results ranging from surprisingly impressive lighting improvements to bizarre and uncanny-looking characters.

Images and videos subsequently spread across social media and Reddit, where reactions have been particularly fierce.

However, there's an important catch: these aren't official implementations.

The games weren't designed or tuned for DLSS 5, and NVIDIA says developers are provided with granular controls over structure, tone and where neural rendering is applied specifically to help preserve their intended visual style.

Even if you love how DLSS 5 looks, there's another problem. It's demanding.

Some of what we've seen looks genuinely impressive. Other examples have wandered directly into the uncanny valley. And whether AI should be interpreting an artist's work in this way is likely to remain a much bigger conversation.

September 3 should finally give us something more useful than leaked experiments to judge.

The question isn't simply whether DLSS 5 can make games look more realistic.

It's whether players actually want it to.
