Yuanlong Lian Interview
Gram Team: Hi Yuanlong! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Yuanlong: I’m from Singapore. I love films, music and video games. I studied Multimedia Design in Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne Australia. I had experiences with filming, graphic design, interface design, as well as animation.
As I love creating experiences either through art or music, creating games provides the best opportunity to combine the two. That was when I started applying for design positions in game companies after I went back to Singapore to pursue my dreams.
I started off working on web-based Japanese card games, and during that time many web-based games were making their way into the mobile games market, so I was in charge of redesigning their interfaces as well as experiences for mobile users.
After that I made my way to work on midcore titles as well as leading them in design over the years. Some games that I have worked on are Puzzle Troopers, Wakfu Raiders, Brave Frontier and most recently Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
Gram Team: What were your first impressions of Gram Games and our games?
Yuanlong: People at Gram Games truly love, as well as creating games. They are great friends to one another, the place has a free-for-all culture.. the environment is rustic.. and every here love life. Gram games embraces healthy peer culture that I don’t experience anywhere else.
The games here are great, simple but have a lot of thought put into it. Wait till you play the prototypes. (Thumbs up)
I decided to join Gram Games as it has a great vibe and great culture that I want to be part of.
Gram Team: What does a game designer do? What makes a game successful? How can we measure our success?
Yuanlong: A game designer could come from any field, whether you are a programmer, an artist, or just a creative individual. All of us have the same goal, which is to create unique and fun experiences for people who love to have fun.
A successful game doesn’t fully rely on numbers but the soul of the developers, as well as being able to grow a social community of players that would follow and support us as we advance.
Gram Team: How’s Istanbul? What were some of the similarities and differences you see compared to what you knew about Istanbul in the past?
Yuanlong: Istanbul is NOT what western coverage always depicts. The lifestyle here actually feels like Australia from my experience studying there for 3 years. It’s just that the food and and people are different and the pace is great.
Gram Team: What kind of games do you like? What are you playing currently?
Yuanlong: I play a wide variety of games, RPG, action, strategy, simulation.. Recently, Shadow of Mordor, I’m a little late, but I’m glad to have played it. There are too much to describe, just play it. Currently, I am also waiting for Fallout 4’s huge DLC.
Gram Team: What is your vision for the future personally and professionally?
Yuanlong: I would definitely keep creating games, and games more personal to myself and people people around me, and to share that experience with the world. Professionally, I would love to still be working with great people who truly care about their creations to make games that players would be excited about when they hear it’s developed by Gram Games.
