Earlier this week Thomas Wollenzin, Lead Audio Programmer for Crytek GmbH, announced CRYENGINE as “officially the first game engine world-wide that is capable of an audio middleware switch at runtime”. The team have showcased/proved that by switching between the Wwise and SDL Mixer implementations in a short tech-video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEyn5YHbgI4.
The video demonstrates it is not necessary to redesign audio implementation in levels and audio specific code. All of this is possible due to CRYENGINE's unique ATL (Audio-Translation-Layer) based core audio technology. This is the first time ever that a game engine world-wide achieved that degree of freedom and modularity in regards to how it handles audio middleware.
