Certain Affinity is an exclusive Austin studio comprised of a tightly-knit group of experienced industry veterans committed to a solid work/life balance. We’re best known for co-developing multiple AAA FPS products, but also working on a few interesting projects of our own.

The Lead Concept Artist reports to the Studio Art Director and will provide direction and team leadership for the Concept Art department. In this role you will create visual languages for new projects and follow established style guides for existing franchises. You’ll also be part of defining the look, feel and fiction of in-game environments, characters, weapons, and world assets. You’ll have opportunities to help your team develop the visual narrative of the worlds we create as well as define the artistic targets by using graphical skills and problem solving including digital painting, sketching and 3d techniques.

    • Create high resolution photo realistic 3D sculpts and 2D illustrations of environments, weapons, characters, and creatures
    • Work closely with the project Art Director to develop style and provide consistent quality across all characters, weapons, creatures and environments
    • Develop, support and challenge the individuals on the concept art team to foster growth, satisfaction and contribution
    • Contribute a wide range of skills as a hands-on concept artist, with the ability to lead by example while helping to grow a team’s individual skills
    • Provide clear and consistent feedback, direction and critique to concept artists for elegant and effective visual solutions for common design challenges
    • Build and define the process and workflow for concept creation
    • Collaborate with the design team to build a visual narrative
    • Build and maintain partner and client relationships, trust and communication
    • Work with development leads and directors to develop a strategy which provides strong concept art resources to cover the studio’s diverse project needs
    • Collaborate with art and project leadership to coordinate concept art resources, schedules and priorities across multiple projects
    • Carry out key department responsibilities that include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, reviewing work for quality, and appraising performance and resolving issues
    • Serve as the external face of Certain Affinity’s concept art team in professional and recruiting events


    • 7+ years game industry production experience, 3+ years specifically in a lead concept role
    • Multiple shipped AAA titles, with at least one in a Lead Concept Artist role
    • Strong grasp of human anatomy and proportion, as well as architectural and engineered forms
    • Seasoned drawing and conceptualization skills with a proven ability to adapt to established styles
    • Ability to communicate ideas quickly through iterative media like sketches and whiteboard diagrams, as well as having strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Good proficiency with Z-Brush, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, and/or other 3D software packages
    • Excellent Proficiency with 2D applications like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter creation tools
    • Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven history of leading and growing a team of highly skilled artists
    • Ability to present (internally and externally) clear vision of how work addresses problems and requirements
    • Excellent understanding of art pipelines and workflows
    • Excellent collaboration and communication skills and the ability to problem solve issues that involve multiple disciplines
    • Self-directed and organized with solid time management skills
    • Ability to understand, and communicate visual direction through words and images

Extra Credit

    • Bachelors degree in Art
    • Graphic design, iconography, layout skills
    • Experience in FPS and/or 3rd person action-adventure game development
