Director of Technical Art

Would you like to work on some of the greatest franchises in gaming history? How about more than one? Certain Affinity is an exclusive Austin studio comprised of a tightly-knit group of experienced industry veterans committed to a solid work/life balance. We’re best known for co-developing multiple AAA FPS products, but also creating interesting new projects of our own that in the works.

As our Director of Technical Art , you’ll create the strategies and perfect the techniques and process that enables the production of world class game art. You’ll lead and mentor a technical team of artists in troubleshooting and problem solving to ensure day to day development runs smoothly and to get in front of production demands. You’ll also get a unique opportunity to be a part of the custom tools and pipelines behind the world’s biggest shooters, while contributing to our own proprietary technology.

This role reports to the VP of Technology & Services, and requires a creative and proactive problem solver that is a technically-driven leader and contributor with proven strategic and team leadership skills.

Responsibilities

    • Work with development leads, directors and VP’s develop a strategy which provides strong technical art resources to cover the studio’s diverse needs.
    • Champion the exploration and implementation of cutting edge technologies and techniques to improve visual quality and smooth technical art pipelines
    • Lead a team that provides high-quality technical problem solving throughout production
    • Develop, support and challenge the individuals on the tech art team to foster growth, satisfaction and contribution
    • Build strong trusted partner relationships with client counterparts
    • Serve as the external face of Certain Affinity’s technical art team at professional and recruiting events
    • Collaborate with art and project leadership to coordinate technical art resources, schedules, and priorities across multiple projects
    • Contribute a wide range of skills as a hands-on technical artist, with the ability to lead by example while helping to grow a team’s individual skills

Requirements

    • Avid interest in and understanding of the latest technologies and methods to optimize and automate technical art pipelines
    • 10+ years game industry production experience, 3+ specifically in a lead technical artist role
    • Shipped multiple AAA titles, with at least two as a Lead Technical Artist
    • Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven history of leading and growing a team of highly skilled and technical artists
    • Provide a consistent source of tech art direction and qualitative feedback for the project, and be the voice of the tech art team to partners
    • Provide concise, actionable feedback to the project’s art team across multiple art disciplines, as well as understand and integrate technical art solutions that meet the needs of engineering, design and production
    • Provide ongoing communication and relationship development with diverse development partners and publishers, creating strategies for artistic direction across a wide range of titles, franchises and game types
    • Provide project and overall team leadership to continue the development of a world class art team
    • Able to present (internally and externally) clear vision of how work addresses problems and requirements
    • Technical fluency in at least one scripting language such as Python, MEL, MaxScript
    • Expert-level familiarity with Autodesk Maya and/or 3ds Max, and Adobe Photoshop
    • Broad experience working in a wide range of proprietary and third party 3D game engines (Unreal, Unity, etc.)
    • Experience working on a diverse range of tech art projects, in terms of art tools, graphics engines and game hardware
    • High technical proficiency in areas such as lighting, rendering, and texturing as it applies to material and shader creation (HLSL, GLSL, CGFX)
    • Expert-level familiarity with environment art creation and workflow, especially with an eye towards performance and memory management
    • Experience advising on, researching, exploring and reporting on a variety of graphics systems and middleware packages

Extra Credit

    • Able to script in more than one language
    • Experience managing real-time rendering, run-time analytics, optimization, shaders and materials
    • Expertise with PBR based pipelines, software and assets (Substance, Quixel Suite, 3D-Coat, etc)
    • Able to envision creative ways to leverage ideas and technologies, and integrate big picture ideas through tools and technology
    • Familiarity with full development languages (C++, C#, etc)
    • Experience with rigging, animation and performance capture integration
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Graphic Art or related field
