Certain Affinity is an independent Austin studio comprised of a tightly-knit group of experienced industry veterans committed to a solid work/life balance. We’re best known for co-developing multiple AAA FPS products, but also work on a few projects of our own, and have very interesting new projects in the works.
As our Technical Art lead, you’ll create the strategies and perfect the techniques and process that enables the production of world class game art. You’ll lead and mentor a technical team of artists in troubleshooting and problem solving to ensure day to day development runs smoothly and to get in front of production demands. You’ll also get a unique opportunity to be a part of the custom tools and pipelines behind the world’s biggest shooters, while contributing to our own proprietary technology.
This role reports to the Art Director, and requires a creative and proactive problem solver that is a technically-driven leader and contributor with proven strategic and team leadership skills.
Work with development leads and directors to develop a strategy which provides strong technical art resources to cover the studio’s diverse needs.
Champion the exploration and implementation of cutting edge technologies and techniques to improve visual quality and smooth technical art pipelines
Lead a team that provides high-quality technical problem solving throughout production
Develop, support and challenge the individuals on the tech art team to foster growth, satisfaction and contribution
Build strong trusted partner relationships with client counterparts
Serve as the external face of Certain Affinity’s technical art team in professional and recruiting events
Collaborate with art and project leadership to coordinate technical art resources, schedules, and priorities across multiple projects
Contribute a wide range of skills as a hands-on technical artist, with the ability to lead by example while helping to grow a team’s individual skills
Avid interest in and understanding of the latest technologies and methods to optimize and automate technical art pipelines
10+ years game industry production experience, 3+ specifically in a lead technical artist role
Shipped multiple AAA titles, with at least one as a Lead Technical Artist
Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven history of leading and growing a team of highly skilled and technical artists
Able to present (internally and externally) clear vision of how work addresses problems and requirements
Technical fluency in at least one scripting language such as Python, MEL, MaxScript
Expert-level familiarity with Autodesk Maya and/or 3ds Max, and Adobe Photoshop
Broad experience working in a wide range of proprietary and third party 3D game engines (Unreal, Unity, etc.)
Experience working on a diverse range of tech art projects, in terms of art tools, graphics engines and game hardware
High technical proficiency in areas such as lighting, rendering, and texturing as it applies to material and shader creation (HLSL, GLSL, CGFX)
Expert-level familiarity with environment art creation and workflow, especially with an eye towards performance and memory management
Experience advising on, researching, exploring and reporting on a variety of graphics systems and middleware packages
Able to script in more than one language
Experience managing real-time rendering, run-time analytics, optimization, shaders and materials
Expertise with PBR based pipelines, software and assets (Substance, Quixel Suite, 3D-Coat, etc)
Able to envision creative ways to leverage ideas and technologies, and integrate big picture ideas through tools and technology
Familiarity with full development languages (C++, C#, etc)
Experience with rigging, animation and performance capture integration
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Graphic Art or related field
