Job Description

At Light Garden we’re building Existent®, a software platform that will transform the VR sector. With Existent® you can reach out and physically interact with objects that look, feel and behave as if they were real.

We enable creators to make experiences in the virtual world feel as real as those in the real one: no controllers, no haptics, just a seamless integration of the virtual and physical world.

Whether it’s being handed a real space cocktail, high-fiving a robot, or discovering a magic crown in a treasure chest, we’re solving complex problems to unleash the full extent of people’s creative imagination. And we’re just getting started.

As one of the first software engineers to join the company you’ll have a huge impact on our success and be right at the core of the initial design and research as we build out our next generation location based VR platform. You’ll also be working alongside industry veterans from triple A games studios, big tech and West End theatre who’ll want to learn as much from you as you will from them.

Join us and help build a version of Virtual Reality like nothing before it. Virtual Reality that makes you truly feel like you’ve been transported to another world.

The Role

  • Be one of the very first engineers on the team and help us build Existent, a platform for truly next generation VR experiences. Help us solve interesting new problems around joining the real and virtual worlds.
  • Work with our customers to help them build amazing VR experiences in Unreal Engine.
  • Help us grow the team by sourcing and interviewing candidates for the engineering and other teams.
  • Help us create a healthy and fun engineering culture. As one of our first employees you’ll have a huge impact on how we work as well as the product itself.

Requirements

  • Professional experience writing C++ with experience working on commercial XR and/or 3D game projects.
  • Great written and verbal communication skills. Experience working effectively with technical and non-technical team members is important.
  • Strong general software engineering skills. You should be able to demonstrate that you can understand product requirements and make good trade-offs in order to architect maintainable and performant systems that meet those requirements.
  • Eligible to work in the UK and able to work from our studio in West London.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with Unreal Engine
  • Experience building XR experiences.
  • Experience with procedural animation techniques: IK, physics-based animation etc.
  • Experience as a people manager. As a new company we expect the team to grow so there will be management opportunities arising if that growth path interests you.
  • Experience working with hardware. Do you think you might be able to jury rig an airsoft gun so that it could be a VR controller or hook up a lever so that it sends signals into UE? That could be useful…
  • Experience interviewing engineering candidates. You’ll certainly be part of the interview team as we grow our engineering team so experience doing this would be great but there’s lots of support available from our existing team.

…and here’s what you can expect from working at Light Garden

When We Work

We realise that work is important, but shouldn’t get in the way of your personal life. That’s why we made a very intentional decision to operate a 4 day work week; around here, Monday is known as "Sunday Two”, and is off for everybody.

Interview Process

Our interview process is intended to be lightweight and resemble a day to day experience at Light Garden as closely as possible. You'll first have a call with our Recruiting Lead, followed by an invite to our studio where you will meet the rest of the team and have a couple of relaxed informal conversations about your personal values and the way you like to work. You will then take part in a technical interview which will either be you talking our CEO/CTO Dan through something you have built, or can instead be a pairing session with Dan on a problem using C++/Unreal that resembles the things you would be working on in the role.

In Summary

If you’re passionate about VR, and building something from the ground up, in an environment created by people who care deeply about building a workplace that works for everyone, we think Light Garden would be a pretty special place, and hope you're interested in what we're doing! If you have any questions that aren’t clearly explained in this ad, please reach out to our Recruiting Lead on salim.hamid@lightgarden.studio and we’d be happy to help.
