Technical Artist (Unreal Engine) - Voluntary

Location: Remote (UK-based or international)
Contract: Voluntary (with potential for paid opportunities as the studio grows)

About Lab Sessions Studio

Lab Sessions Studio is an independent, fully remote game development team with roots in the North East of England. We’re a small but ambitious group of developers building compact, expressive experiences through experimentation and iteration. Our focus is on rapid development and bold ideas — delivering two micro games a year that each explore a distinct gameplay fantasy or creative concept.

Though we haven’t released our first titles yet, we’re actively prototyping and preparing for our initial public launches. This is an exciting opportunity to join the studio early in its journey and help shape our creative and technical direction.

The Role

We’re looking for a Technical Artist (Unreal Engine) to join our growing remote team. You’ll act as the bridge between art and engineering — helping us build visually striking, performant, and artist-friendly workflows. This is a highly collaborative role where you’ll work closely with environment artists, designers, and programmers to solve creative and technical challenges across a variety of small-scale projects.

This is a voluntary role for the time being, suitable for someone looking to gain industry experience, build a portfolio, and help define the visual and technical identity of an emerging studio. As Lab Sessions grows and begins releasing commercial titles, our goal is to transition voluntary contributors into paid positions where possible.

Responsibilities

Develop, maintain, and optimise art pipelines within Unreal Engine.

Implement shaders, materials, and visual effects that support gameplay and artistic direction.

Collaborate with artists to ensure assets are game-ready and efficiently integrated.

Prototype and support visual scripting and procedural tools to streamline asset creation.

Troubleshoot performance issues and assist in achieving visual quality within technical constraints.

Provide guidance on best practices for asset workflows, lighting, and scene optimisation.

About You

We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving creative problems and thrives in a collaborative, experimental environment. You’re curious, proactive, and eager to learn — whether you’re refining shaders, creating tools, or finding elegant solutions to visual challenges.

Essential skills:

Experience working in Unreal Engine 5 (materials, Blueprints, shaders, etc.)

Understanding of art pipelines, asset optimisation, and PBR workflows

Basic knowledge of scripting or tool creation (Blueprints, Python, or similar)

Strong communication and self-management skills in a remote environment

Nice to have:

Experience with Niagara, Houdini, or procedural generation tools

Familiarity with source control (Perforce, Git)

A strong portfolio or examples of relevant personal projects

What We Offer

The opportunity to help shape the early identity of an ambitious indie studio

Full creative input and collaboration with a passionate, experienced team

A flexible, fully remote working environment built on trust and respect

Mentorship and support for your professional development

Potential to transition into a paid role as the studio grows and ships titles

Join Us

If you’re excited by the idea of working in a creative, experimental environment and want to help build something from the ground up, we’d love to hear from you.

Please send your portfolio or examples of your work, along with a brief note about why you’re interested, to [carlos.findley@labsessionsstudio.com].
