Sumo North West is the latest addition to the family. Established by Scott Kirkland - BAFTA nominated local games industry veteran and co-founder of (Sony) Evolution Studios and Secret Sorcery - the studio's mandate is to build a world-class team of technologists and creatives to provide efficient and effective solutions to prestigious partners from around the world, working on some of the biggest, newest and most popular IPs and platforms along the way!

The role @ Sumo

As a Technical Director, you'll provide and pursue studio and project technical direction in collaboration with the Studio Director. In this critical role within the Studio, you'll define and ensure engineering and technical best practices, maintaining quality, avoiding unnecessary complexity and striving for efficiency. Talent is critical to our success, you'll be playing a key role in recruiting, inspiring and nurturing a world-class team of technologists in partnership with the Studio Director. You'll provide and facilitate day to day technical feedback and mentoring of the team.

Your will contribute to pitches, evaluating the scope of work and producing/validating robust plans, provide clear written specifications and guidelines and iterative feedback as required, and maintain awareness of and report upon technical progress across multiple projects. Your role will be to facilitate and contribute to timely and high-quality delivery of project milestones, using direct and leverage external contractor and in-sourced engineering capacity when required.


To be successful you will have:


  • Proven and respected technical leader with a positive, can-do attitude and a history of success on significant projects;
  • Outstanding cross-discipline and inter-studio communicator, able to inspire and guide teams and colleagues and maintain client relationships;
  • Broad and deep contemporary knowledge of game systems, engines and PC/console platforms;
  • Expert knowledge of C++ and software architecture, proficient in other relevant languages;
  • Goal orientated, proactive and methodical problem-solver;
  • Strong 3D math skills;
  • In-depth knowledge of revision control systems with emphasis on Perforce;
  • Proficient and pragmatic in debugging and profiling/optimisation;
  • Quality-minded, with great attention to detail;
  • Development experience spanning multiple genres;
  • Passionate about games and game technology;



  • It would be advantageous if you have:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related subject;
  • Knowledge of commercial game engines and middleware;
  • Experience of modern low-level graphics APIs such as DirectX 12 and Vulkan;
  • Experience of shader programming/optimisation;
  • Knowledge of continuous integration and build distribution systems;
