Framestore is looking for an experienced Lead Programmer with 5+ years of video games experience to push the development of digital humans at Framestore.  This development will impact Framestore interactive products by allowing Framestore to create believable characters on par or better with what can be found in AAA video games.  This role has the potential to impact the virtual production pipeline, animated TV series and over time even highly realistic VFX productions.

The first project the lead programmer will tackle is a highly complex R&D experience involving several software components integrated from several third party software companies and university research institutions.  The project will involve areas as diverse as text to speech/facial animation systems, high-quality volumetric capture and complex rendering techniques.  Framestore responsibilities are focused on character design and modelling, rigging, rendering and software engineering.  The lead programmer will be accountable for preserving the integrity of the executable, set technical guidelines for all partners and content creators and balance the technical risks of the projects.

Overlapping the project, the lead programmer will generalise the learnings from the project by documenting, refactoring and sharing the components with all the Framestore studios worldwide so the company can deliver the highest quality real-time solutions for our clients.

The lead programmer will also have the opportunity to be involved in exciting convergence initiatives using game engines for virtual production, fast rendering and fast previewing.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive the project technical efforts, including key decision-making to hit project objectives
  • Develop clean, optimized high and low-level code in-engine within the designed framework
  • Identify technical issues and solve complex problems with innovative solutions
  • Setup the architecture of the project
  • Develop and test code, fix bugs, and profile and optimize code to an agreed design strategy
  • Work with CG artists from Film VFX and Real-Time in order to implement assets in-engine
  • Document and peer review technical designs with other software engineers
  • Set and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Research innovative ideas to improve efficiency and satisfy technical requirements, especially when it comes to the areas of Digital humans and convergence areas involving the usage of game engines to produce non-interactive content.
  • Work with Producers, technical and creative leads to provide input for the budgeting process for technical development/engine elements of a production

Required Skills

  • 5+ Years of experience in leading a game development team, of at least 5 developers, in a complex environment and managing technical interfaces with multiple components providers.
  • Strong experience with C++, C#
  • Strong experience with Epic Unreal Engine
  • Very solid rendering/animation knowledge (real-time rendering, animation)
  • Excellent communication and inspiring leadership skills
  • Strong software architecture, mathematics and physics understanding
  • Solid understanding of game development, real-time rendering and game engines

Personal attributes

  • Highly committed and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Extremely organized and rigorous with excellent attention to detail
  • Deadline oriented; able to work and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment
