Director of Operations Expiring soon

Hinterland Games

Vancouver, Canada

Senior Management

Director Executive

Permanent | Full Time

Hinterland is growing into a multi-project, multi-platform creator and we need a Director of Operations to help us ensure that growth in project size and complexity is handled wisely and effectively.

As part of the studio leadership team and reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Operations serves as a vital health-check function on the teams and projects in the studio.

In this role, you will establish and shepherd a set of project planning tools and processes for complex software development products. You’ll lead a team of Logistics specialists in supporting development teams to plan, track, and manage resources (time and people) in support of specific project and company goals. You will help establish the project planning and logistics processes and culture at the studio, and therefore you will have a major impact on the way we approach creating quality and innovation in our experiences, while also taking care of our teams.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years of project management and planning expertise earned across one or more medium to large-sized game studios or publishers, and across several different projects that have gone through the full life-cycle, from conceptualization through production and to maintenance and sunsetting. You need to be comfortable with discussing and planning feature and content creation across all disciplines, and understand how the output from the project teams interfaces with your colleagues in the Publishing and Community teams, so that you can help ensure clean hand-offs and timely delivery.

As we have a fairly flat structure in the company and have a high-autonomy, high-accountability culture, we are looking for a “soft power” leader who can work in close collaboration with other discipline directors and project leads to ensure the teams, projects, and studio resources are well managed. By bringing your crisp and informed decision-making process to solving complex logistics challenges, you will not be a babysitter, but a force multiplier for the success of the teams and the studio,.

You will work closely with the CEO and a small team of director-level experts to ensure the successful delivery of project features and content. Your main tool for accomplishing this, in addition to your wealth of experience, your excellent communication skills, and honest and “can-do” attitude, is the project plan. You will need to bring all your creativity to your approach to planning and logistics to help design and shepherd tools and processes that are aligned with core Hinterland development and workplace values -- we are not looking for “off the shelf” solutions. Your experience is what brings you in the door, but your ability to assess dynamic situations and develop forward-thinking solutions in collaboration with other experts in the studio will ultimately be what determines your success in this role.

Some specific Director of Operations duties include:

  • Establishing the project management culture in the studio, ensuring it is compatible with Hinterland goals and team values.
  • Work with the CEO and Director of People & Culture to develop the multi-year hiring plan for the studio.
  • Work in collaboration with the CFO on project budgets and financial tracking.
  • Lead a team of logistics experts in supporting the project teams with planning, tracking, and communications tools.
  • Take the lead on defining the processes and tools for planning and communication across all projects and the team as a whole, and ensuring they are maintained and improved as necessary. This includes the software we use for tracking, communication, etc. in the studio.
  • Support the CEO in spearheading forward-thinking strategies around team organization, structure, and development methodology.
  • Collaborate with project core teams to understand their needs and establish logistics infrastructure to support them.
  • Collate project data and present it to the CEO in the form of regular updates around staffing, progress tracking, communication around risks, etc.
  • Support a busy CEO in whatever way possible to help maximize their time working on high-value activities.

In addition to leading a small team of Logistics-focused team members, the Director of Operations also has direct supervisory responsibility for the IT, Admin, and Facilities operations at the studio.

It’s important to note that the specific responsibilities of this role will increase as the studio and projects continue to grow in complexity, so the ideal candidate has a growth mindset and is comfortable working with an environment that is undergoing sustained change and adaptation.

Keep Calm and waka waka...
